Water Project at Chey School ~ Siem Reip Province, Cambodia
In our June 2024 e-newsletter we shared our excitement of the completion of our newest literacy project - the construction and outfitting of Chey Library in Cambodia, our 4th library project with Ponheary Ly Foundation, a nonprofit committed to empowering disadvantaged children and youth in Northern Cambodia with access to public school education.
The libraries serve students and community members in four rural communities: Romchek, Srayang, Chey and Knar where access to books, much less libraries, was extremely difficult. Now, essential learning resources are available on students' doorstep and tailored specifically to their grades and needs. The libraries play a crucial role in students' academic development, while also fostering a love of reading for pleasure, and enhancing community growth. Over 12,000 books were borrowed from all 4 libraries in the first half of the 2024 school year which exceeded all expectations.
During the construction of Chey Library we were made aware of the desperate water situation at adjoining Chey School. As WaterBridge Outreach encompasses both books + water projects, we eagerly agreed to partner with PLF on a much needed water project which would bring our work in the Chey community full circle.
With financing from WaterBridge Outreach, four hand washing stations (totalling 18 lineal meters) were built to serve the 850 primary school students and the 300 secondary students at Chey School.
In addition, upgrades were made to the pumping systems that supply the campus with water for toilets and the gardens. The pump that pushes water from their well up to a receiving tank was replaced, and a secure box housing it was built to prevent theft. Of vital importance, the school's water filtration system was thoroughly cleaned, and all water filters were replaced to ensure that students had access to clean drinking water.
Access to education and access to clean water are basic human rights. The completion of a books and a water project in Chey village has allowed us to assist PLF in their mission to break down barriers to education that impoverished students face and to ensure that they have equal opportunities for advancements. With the right opportunities, these students can help lift their families out of poverty and re-shape their communities.
