Dalit Toilet Complex Rehabilitation ~ Mamallapuram, India

In many parts of India the Dalits – the community or caste originally referred to as the “Untouchables” – still suffer discrimination. WBO, working with Curt Degler of Save Int'l, has engaged over the years in numerous literacy and water infrastructure projects that express respect for the human dignity of the Dalits while also meeting basic needs. The photos shown here illustrate our most recent project: the repair and rehabilitation of what had become a non-functioning water system that supplies the toilet complex serving the Dalit community of Mamallapuram in Southeast India. An important feature of this highly practical project is that the Mamallapuram Dalit Council themselves have played a major role in this repair and renewal of the toilet complex.
